The Thrill of It All

As I set here writing my all latest and greatest blog entry, a highly competitive and entertaining chess game is unfolding.

I'm in a coffee shop on a Saturday evening. Customers come and go. But the audience for the chess match is consistent. These guys are using a timer to force the action. They're serious. Coats off. Visual aim directly on the black and white pieces. Sturdy, strategic moves. No conversing among the competitors; the growing audience, though, provides commentary.

Interesting. The challenge of man. We are competitive by nature. We want to compete. A friendly game of chess is mental, of the mind, a thinking persons game.

Oh yes, the thrill of it all!!!

The day after Christmas is a challenge. The holiday sends relief, but also a disconnect is ever alive, too. I'm kind of laid back right now, feeling the spirit of the holiday, cherishing the family moments. This coffee shop is peaceful and quiet; calmness floats in the air. The rattle of dishes emerge from the kitchen as a working squeezes the mop in the bucket. Floor cleaning time. She's challenged, too. Closing time is near.

The thrill of all.

The chess game is still going on. The crowd has strunk to two viewers. From my vantage point, a new game has commenced. The thrill of victory is moist on the lips of the winner as the loser grits his teeth. Game 2, 3, 4, 5...I don't know. I'm inspired by those fellows on the chess board. It is something to do on the day after Christmas.

The thrill of it all.
